Every great business starts from a great idea. Every great idea is sparked from great thinking. But thinking can begin in many different forms, and a variety of settings. Just five years ago, in 2005, an idea came about from 
casual conversation, in a most-unlikely place. Freshman football: Fern and Ruthie’s sons are both playing for the high school freshman team. We’d known each other, and been acquaintances, but we hadn’t had a deep relationship. With every passing touchdown or field goal that the team scored, the more our relationship grew. Game after game, we talked and talked. We’d talk about our families, and our hobbies—we’d talk about jobs and career paths that we each had taken.
By coincidence, at one of the last football games of the season, we stumbled upon a topic that both of us shared in common—our interest in entrepreneurship. We both were extremely interested in opening up a store in the area—and soon ideas started flowing. Finally, we said, let’s do it! It was a cooperative process. We each originally had ideas for what we wanted our store to be, but after research and deliberation, it became clear what the best option was: a retail collegiate apparel store. And on December 1, 2006, University Avenue became a reality.
Everyone has a need for collegiate clothing or accessories. With such a wide variety of items and schools, it’s hard not to find something at the store—whether it be for yourself, or a gift for someone else. Young kids like to wear clothing to support their parents’ or siblings’ universities, or maybe just their favorite team. Many just love to fill their bedroom with cool accessories that sport their favorite schools. High school kids like to wear the different schools that they dream of attending one day. Alums love to show their pride where the college they attended. Grandparents seem to support it all!
University Avenue carries over 75 colleges and universities. Everything in the store is officially licensed clothing and accessories, meaning that the university has approved the sale of the item or the artwork on the clothing. We carry more accessories than most stores – accept of course, the school bookstore.
We carry only quality merchandise from quality vendors. University Avenue carries clothing for youth and adult men and woman. We even have some baby novelty items. But, what we have become known for is the amount of unique gift items we carry. There truly is something for everyone!
